    - We sponsored a jamboree at our building.
    - We have one scooter in use in our community.
    - We are a partner in Booth Charities TV Bingo.
    - Held our annual walk for prostate cancer ( Walk in His Shoes Campaign ). We collected $837.00.
    - On Canada Day we held a flag raising ceremony with the singing of O Canada. We held a breakfast at our building after the flag raising. We also had the cutting of our Canada Day Cake.
    - We continue to give get well and sympathy cards to people of Garnish and Frenchman's Cove.
    - We are now preparing for our events in the Garnish Bakeapple Festival.
    - Donated $100.00 to Salvation Army Over 60's Club.

    - We have two scooters in use in our community.
    - We continue to give get well and sympathy cards to people of Garnish and Frenchman's Cove.
    - We sponsor a monthly jamboree at our building.
-   - We helped the Anglican Church  with their coldplate dinner.
    - We held our annual Spring tollgate to raise funds for Diabetes Cavalcade. We gave out pamphlets making people aware of the symptoms of diabetes.
    - We have given the following donations:
            .$100.00 unity garden being constructed on the grounds of Blue Crest Seniors' Home.
            .$300.00 Diabetes Cavalcade.
            .$100.00 Kin and Friends Radiothon in support of our hospital.
            .$100.00 Janeway Hospital.
            .$100.00 Children's' Wish Foundation.
            .$200.00 send a child to St. John's for medical reasons.
    - We will pay two students to mow our adopt-a-spot.
    - We are a partner in Booth Charities T. V. Bingo.
    - The annual VOCM 10km. run from Garnish to Frenchman's Cove took place recently and lions from our club helped.

                                                                                    Activities:
 
        -    Our club participated in a Burin Peninsula volunteers get together, held in Garnish.
        -    We have two scooters in use in our community.
        -    We held a special breakfast in support of Balsom Family Trust Fund.
        -    We sponsor a monthly jamboree at our building.
        -    Members from our club attended the recent D.G.O.
        -    We have given the following donations:
            . $100.00 Burin Peninsula Health Care.
            . $25.00   clubs directory.
            . $25.00   ST. Joseph's School  Lamaline, to help with travel to Provincial Drama Festival Corner Brook.
            . $20.00    Lung Association.
            . $80.00    bought two tickets from Knights of Columbus.
            . $50.00    SPCA Burin.
            . $30.00    ad in Burin Peninsula Drama Festival's Booklet.
        -    We continue to give get well and sympathy cards to people of Garnish and Frenchman's Cove.
        -    At a recent funeral we set up a T . V. monitor in the basement of the church so that the overflow of people could participate in the service. We also directed the parking of vehicles  on the parking lot.
        -    Balsom Family Trust Fund is doing well. Some of the funds have already been used.
        -    Our club sponsored the Junior Speak-off at our building.   A lunch was served after.
        -    We are a partner in Booth Charities TV Bingo.

ACTIVITIES:
 
        - We are one of the partners in Booth Charities TV Bingo.
        - We organized a pea soup dinner January 30th and sold tickets on a bottle of wine at our jamboree. We realized a profit of $500.00 to be donated to the Haiti Relief Effort. Thank to the people of our community for their support.
        - We sponsor a monthly jamboree .
        -We have finished our Valentine Ticket Draw. We were successful in selling 2000 tickets.        
        - We continue to give get well and sympathy cards to people of Garnish and Frenchman's Cove.
        - The projects on our building are now completed. We have new shingles on the roof, a complete new floor and our kitchen re-arranged and made larger.
        - We have two scooters in use in our community.
        - We have given the following donations:
            . $50.00 to help a student go to the Dominican Republic on a volunteering mission.
            . $20.00 to Lung Association.
            . $25.00 to Marystown Minor Hockey.
        - We sponsor mix darts on Friday Night.
        - We gave a basket of fruit to one of our lions who was hospitalized.
        - We are involved with VOCM  Cares Bingo.

ACTIVITIES:

- We have two scooters in use in our community.

-Our members attended the recent zone meeting and were involved in the zone darts. One of our members will be involved with the dart team going to Max Simms Memorial Camp.

-We are one of the partners in Booth Charities TV. Bingo.

-Continuing with repairs to our building.

-We sponsor mix darts on Friday Night.

-Our club passed a motion to sponsor a junior speak-off at the district level. All clubs in our zone have been asked to do this.

-We sponsor a monthly jamboree at our building .

-We are planning an event to support the Haiti Relief Effort. ( next month's report )

-Involved in our annual Valentine Ticket Draw. We are selling tickets in the malls.

-We continue to give get well and sympathy to people of Garnish and Frenchman's Cove.

-We are involved with VOCM Cares Bingo.

Garnish Lions Club Santa Parade 2009

        Donations:

         - $75.00                                        help send a child to St. John's for medical attention

        Activities:

         -  We lent our Santa Claus suit  to Garnish Recreation Commission for their kiddies breakfast with Santa.

        -  We continue to give get well and sympathy cards to people of Garnish and Frenchman's Cove.

        -  The week of December 7th---11th our club served breakfast to the students of Jamieson Academy School.

        -  On December 12th our club held its annual Santa Claus parade. The Town of Garnish paid 50% of the cost.  The parade ended at the Garnish Community Centre where we gave all the children goody bags.  We also requested stores to place boxes in their stores where parents put presents for their children. Santa presented the children with those gifts. A successful parade.

        -  Some of our members assisted the Salvation Army with their Christmas Kettle Campaign.

        -  Our club celebrated 35 years of  lionism on November 28th. There were approximately sixty people present. We thank all of our guest for being with us on this special occasion and for participating in the celebration. Our club, with the help of friends, prepared the cold plate supper. Also at the charter celebrations, a $100.00 scholarship, in memory of deceased lions, was given to a deserving student from our town.

        -  We have two motor scooters in use in our community.

        -  On December 15th,  we were pleased to honour our seniors by having them come to the Garnish Community Centre. We had local musicians proving music and songs from the Christmas Season. We provided them with a meal and other goodies, more singing and finally a visit from Santa.

        -  On December 19th we prepared a turkey dinner for the Garnish Fire Department. They paid us $10.00 for each meal so we did okay. We have provided this service for the last three or four years, so one could safely assume they like our cooking and hospitality.

        -  We are one of the partners in Booth Charities TV Bingo.

        -  We were able to access funds from the government for much needed repairs to our building. We have new shingles on the roof and a new floor. Repairs will continue until early February.    

        -  We sponsor mix darts on Thursday nights.

         Activities:

             -    Involved with VOCM Cares Bingo

            -    On November 8th, at the Lions Center, a Remembrance Day Ceremony took place that included   wreath laying.  Our Federal and Provincial politicians were in attendance.  Fortune Legion with the help of Fortune Sea Cadets and local clergy conducted the ceremony.  After the ceremony people attending were treated to a lunch. We paid transportation for the Fortune Legion to travel to Garnish. 

                On November 11th we were invited to Fortune to participate in their ceremony.  We are so fortunate to have this special relationship with Fortune.

            -    Partner in Booth Charities Bingo.

            -    Our club is now helping the Salvation Army with their Christmas Kettle Campaign.

            -    Two of our motor scooters are in use in our community.

            -    We continue to give get - well and sympathy cards to the people of Garnish and Frenchman's Cove.

  • $25.00      -    helped a lady from Grand le Pierre finance her travels to St. John's for medical attention
Activities:
  • Two of our scooters are in use in the Community.
  • For our World Services Day project, we visited the Senior's Home in Grand Bank.  We held a short Christian service intermingled with gospel a sing-a-along.  We also provided fruit for the citizens.
  • Partner in Booth Charities TV Bingo
  • At our dinner meeting of Oct. 06, we invited two people to membership in our Club.  This is always a marvelous occasion.
  • Involved in VOCM Bingo
  • Our Lions Building is costly to operate but it provides our community with another venue for community events such as Saturday jamborees, birthday and anniversary parties, Lions Club events and other community activities.

 Members at the end of September  14. We lost two good members (man and wife), they moved from our area for personal reasons.

                                     OTHER ACTIVITIES

          - held our annual Fall Tollgate in support of Sight First 2. At the same time we did our drug awareness project by distributing information on drug abuse.       

         - cleaned our adopted highway section.   We collected forty bags of garbage.

         - started our Friday Night mixed darts.

         - again this year we will have a small ticket draw at our meetings in support of  Diabetes  Cavalcade.

         - four of our lions helped with the Golf  Tournament in support of our hospital.

     We were busy this month with our events in The Garnish Bakeapple Festival. We ran the following events:

                   - a jamboree at our building - full house.

                   - bingo at the Garnish Community Centre.

                   - bean supper at our building.

                   - breakfast at Garnish Community Centre.

     

     We gave our building rent free for a youth event.

       -planned our projects for our involvement in the up coming Garnish Bakeapple Festival.

       -We held our annual Canada Day Celebrations. A  flag raising ceremony took place at the Lions Adopt-a- Spot.

        While the flag was being raised O' Canada was being sung.

        -  A  breakfast was served at the Lions Centre. A free well donation was accepted for the breakfast. Canada Day flags,

           pins etc. were distributed to the youth.

             We also had a Canada Day cake that was cut by the eldest male and female present

    -Our community welcomed three soldiers back from stays of duty in Afghanistan. Our club was pleased to participate in this event. 

     Two of our members were on the planning committee and one of them was MC for the

     function. We also purchased the welcoming cake.

    - hired a student to mow our adopt-a-spot.

    - held our annual Spring Tollgate and did our diabetes awareness project the same time. We

      collected $300.00 for Diabetes Cavalcade and distributed cards containing information about

- we  have a  trust  account  with  $1736.91  in  it.  This money will  be  used  to  help  a  citizen  of  our  community,
 
  waiting  to  get  a  call,  to travel  to  Halifax  to  receive  a  kidney-pancreas  transplant.

 MEMBERS AT THE CLOSE OF APRIL:  16.

  DONATIONS:

$200  To a lion running for 2nd vice district governor.

 $20  to a church in memory of a lion's brother

  ACTIVITIES WE DO ON A REGULAR BASIS:

  • Darts every week

  • Involved in  VOCM  cares  bingo

  • Partner in booth  charities  weekly  bingo

  • Send get well and sympathy cards to people of our community.

  • Give fruit baskets and cards to people celebrating a 90th birthday and a 50th wedding anniversary.

  • Sell tickets each meeting in aid of diabetes. All funds go to diabetes cavalcade.

  • Own a motor scooter being used by a senior in our community.

 OTHER ACTIVITIES:

  • Held our annual cold plate fundraiser and realized a profit of  $ 790.

  • Donated ten cold plates plus extra food to a grieving family in our area.

  • One of our members  made soup. We took a bowl of soup and a cut  of pie  around to shut-ins  in Garnish and Frenchman's Cove.

  • Gave a fruit basket to a lion's wife who was hospitalized.

 

 

  • Electric Scooters available - Garnish Lions Club has two scooters available to anyone in Garnish or Frenchman's Cove who needs assistance in getting around.  There is no charge for this service and all maintenance and repairs are taken care of  by the Lions Club.  Contact any Lions Club member for more information or call President Melvin Francis at 826.2031.

  • Lions Club Annual Senior's Christmas Party took place on Thursday, Dec. 11.  More than thirty seniors sang Christmas songs and had supper together.  Santa paid a visit at the end. To see more, follow the link below.

      Other events Garnish Lions have been participating in include:

  • Starting Monday, Dec. 01, Garnish Lions Club will be serving breakfast for a week at Jamieson Academy.

  • Lions members are also assisting with the Salvation Army Kettle effort in Marystown.

  • Lions Club hosted Christmas Party for Garnish and Frenchman's Cove Seniors, Dec. 11 (See Below)
