ACTIVITY REPORT FOR DECEMBER 2011.

 
    Garnish Lions Club

    Secretary: Lion Sarah Walters.
 
    Membership: 14 member.
 
    Donations and Other Charitable Activities.
 
    - $25.00 Janeway Children's Hospital.
    - $25.00 Epilepsy Newfoundland and Labrador.
    - We have two scooters in use in our community.
    - We continue to give get well/sympathy cards to residents of our community.
    - We held our Santa Claus Parade on December 10th in partnership with the town of Garnish. Also during the parade we collected food for the food bank.
    - We held our senior's party on December 12th.
 
    Fundraiser Activities:
 
    - We continue to raise funds at each meeting for diabetes.
    - We are partners in Booth Charities TV Bingo.
    - We continue to take part in VOCM Cares Bingo.
    - We held a jamboree this month and we sponsor mix darts every Friday Night.

        DONATIONS AND OTHER CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES.
 
        -$25.00  Canadian Cancer Society
        -$100.00  Lions Max Simms Memorial Camp.
        -$25.00  Christmas Seal Campaign.
        -$100.00  VOCM Cares Happy Tree
        -$50.00 Grace Sparkes House for Christmas Gifts.
        -$75.00  resident of Frenchmen's Cove for medical travel.
 
        -We send get well and sympathy cards to community residents 
        -We have two motor scooters in use in our community.
        -We held a Remembrance Day Ceremony in our community.
        -We are collecting used eyeglasses for Sight ll.
        -Our club celebrated 37 years of lionism on November 25th. There were approximately fifty people present. We thank all of our guest for being with us on this special occasion and for their participation in the celebration. We were extra pleased to have our District Governor Lion Tom and his wife present, Lion Tom is a member of our club. Also a one hundred dollar scholarship was presented to a deserving student of our community. The scholarship was presented in memory of our club's deceased lions.
 
        FUNDRAISER ACTIVITIES
 
        -We are partners in Booth Charities Bingo.
        -We participate in VOCM Cares Bingo.
        -We sell tickets at each meeting in support of diabetes.
        -We sponsor weekly mixed darts at our building.

        - $100.00   to trust fund set up by Whit Bourne Lions Club to provide assistance for medical travel to a resident of their area.
 
        - $100.00     to Janeway Hospital.
 
        - $300.00    Bakeapple Festival Committee.
 
        - $150.00    to a member of our club for medical travel.
 
        - For World Service Day we visited the seniors of Ocean View Manor and provided music and lunch for them.
 
        - We continue to send get well / sympathy cards to community residents.
 
        - We continue to provide two scooters to residents of our community.
 
                                                       FUNDRAISER ACTIVITIES
 
        - Held a breakfast to raise funds for our building.
 
        - We are partners in Booth Charities Bingo.

     $25.00 Parkinson Disease.

    $50.00 Burin Peninsula Health Care Foundation Golf Tournament.

    $1700.00 to a resident of Garnish for travel to receive a double transplant.

    $25.00 Children's Wish Foundation Walk, taking place at Marystown.

    Continue to provide two scooters to residents of our community.

    Gave a fruit basket to a member of our club who was in the hospital.

    Sent a get well card to a member of St. Lawrence Club in hospital in St. John's.

 

    FUNDRAISER ACTIVITIES:

     Our members helped at Burin Peninsula Health Care Foundation Golf Tournament, along with other clubs in our Zone.

    We are partners in Boot Charity Bingo.

    We continue to take part in VOCM Cares Radio Bingo

    - We have had a meeting to prepare for our events in Garnish Bakeapple Festival.
 
                                                              CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES
 
    -We have two scooters in use in our community.
    -On Canada Day we held a flag raising ceremony with the singing of O'  Canada. A breakfast was served at our building after the flag raising. We also had the cutting of our Canada Day Cake. This activity was attended by people of all ages.
    -We continue to give get well and sympathy cards to people of Garnish and Frenchman's Cove.
 
                                                               FUNDRAISER ACTIVITIES
 
    -We sponsored a jamboree at our building.
    -We are a partner in Booth Charities TV. Bingo.
    -Breakfast served at our Canada Day Activities.
    -We are presently selling tickets on a BBQ.

                                                                      ACTIVITIES
 
        -We hired students to mow our adopt-a-spot this summer.
        -Our last club meeting was a dinner meeting. We had Lion Lewis Payne, Zone Chair and three other members from the Grand Bank Club in attendance. Lion Lew did the insulation of our officers.
        -We have received a government project for our club valued at $35000. Hopefully work will get underway soon.
 
                                             DONATIONS AND CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES
 
        -$70.00  help a child with Autism attend a Hawaiian Summer Camp.
        -$100.00  Amanda Stockley to help her attend a Global Leo Conference in Seattle.
        -$500.00 Diabetes Cavalcade.
        -$300.00  LFC. All members of our club are now life members of LFC.
        -$ 75.00   help a resident of our community travel to St. John's for medical attention.
        -$100.00  Janeway Teleathon.
        -$200.00  Garnish Fire Department.
        -$ 50.00 Gerard Bailey Nite Golf Tournament in support of diabetes.
        - Our Publicity Committee have given out two sympathy cards, two get well cards and have made two hospital visits.
        - We helped the Anglican Church with their cold plate takeout.
        - Two of our members represented our club at a meeting of the Health Foundation and Zone 10.
        - Our club along with clubs in Zone 10 have committed to raise $250000 to make improvements to the operating room at the Burin Hospital.
        - With the help of our friends we cleaned our adopted highway. A peasoup dinner was served in our building after.
        - July 25th we did our annual walk for prostate cancer ( Walk a Mile in His Shoes Campaign ). We are proud to say that we raised approximately $800.00. Friends of our club were once again a tremendous help.
        - We own two motor scooters and have them in use in our community.
 
                                              FUNDRAISER ACTIVITIES
 
        - We held a successful tollgate. We collected $ 472.00. Proceeds going to Diabetes Cavalcade.
        - We rented our building for a party.
        - We are partners in Booth Charities TV. Bingo.

ACTIVITIES
 
-Two of our members attended a Leadership Training Session at Max Simms Memorial Camp.
-We had four members from our club attend the Multiple District Convention in St. John's.
 
Donations and Charitable Activities
 
- $100.00 District Disaster Fund
- $100.00 Lion Tom's directory
- $50.00   Burin Peninsula SPCA.
- $100.00 Kin and Friends Radiothon in support of health care on the Burin Peninsula.
- We have set up a committee to make plans in the event of a disaster taking place in our area.
- Our Publicity Committee gave out two get well cards, one sympathy card and a fruit basket.
- We sell tickets at our meetings in support of Diabetes Cavalcade.
- We have two motor scooters in use in our community.
 
Fundraiser Activities
 
-We held our annual turkey cold plate fundraiser. We sold 450 plates. A successful fundraiser. We really appreciated the help we received from friends of our club.
-We are partners in Booth Charities TV. Bingo.
-We rented our building for a shower.
-We held a jamboree at our building.

        - $35.00  Multiple District Convention Booklet

        - $50.00  Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation.
 
        - We held our annual  Soup for Shut-Ins Project. For this project we take a bowl of soup and a cut of pie to those in our community who are shut-in.
 
        - Our club is proud of Lion Tom who is now District Governor elect for our district and Lion Bruce who will be our Zone Chair. We were also very pleased to help Lion Tom with his hospitality room.
 
        - We recently delivered a motor scooter to a resident of our community. We now have two motor scooters in use.
 
        - Our Publicity Committee have delivered one get - well card and three sympathy cards to residents of our community.

 ACTIVITIES

 
        -donations:
            . $20.00-- All Saints Anglican Church Cemetery Fund, Foxtrap.
            . $20.00-- St. Giles Anglican Church Cemetery Fund, Garnish.
        -during our Santa Claus Parade we collected 30 pounds of food for the food bank.

 

        -On December 18th our club held its annual Santa Claus Parade. The Town of Garnish paid 50% of the cost. The parade ended at The Garnish Community Centre where we gave all the children goody bags. We also requested store owners place boxes in their stores where people placed presents for their children. Santa presented the children with those gifts. A successful parade.

 

        -this month the publicity committee of our club have given out 2 fruit baskets, 3 get well cards and 3 sympathy cards.
        -fundraiser - we sold approximately 800 tickets on a quilt.
        -sponsor mix darts on Friday Nights.
        -we have a motor scooter in use in our community.
        -tickets for fundraiser supporting Lion Max Simms Camp bought by our members.
        -sell tickets at each meeting, funds will go to Diabetes Cavalcade.

            -sponsor mix darts on Friday Nights.
            -sell tickets each meeting, funds will go to Diabetes Cavalcade.
            -again this month our club helped the Salvation Army with their Christmas Kettle Campaign.
            -continue to give get well and sympathy cards to the people of Garnish and Frenchman's Cove.
            -our club celebrated 36 years of lionism on November 27th. There were approximately forty-five people present. We thank all of our guest for being with us on this special occasion and for their participation in the celebration. Our club with the help of friends prepared a hot turkey dinner. Also at the celebrations two one hundred dollar scholarships were presented to two deserving students from our town. Those scholarships were presented in memory of our club's deceased lions.
            -we have a motor scooter in use in our community.
            -repaired a fence for a lady living near our club.
            -donations:

            -we are one of the partners in Booth Charities TV. Bingo.
            -on December 9th we honoured our seniors by giving them a Christmas Party at our club. We had our local musicians provide music and songs from the Christmas Season. We treated them to a meal and other goodies given by our town and store owners. A visit from Santa was the highlight of the evening.
            -the week of  Dec. 6th to 10th we served breakfast to the students of Jamieson Academy

       1. Donations:
 
         $75.00 to take a child to St. John's for medical attention.
         $25.00 Lung Association
         $25.00 Epilepsy Newfoundland and Labrador.
 
        2. For our World Service Day Project we visited the seniors at Garnish Seniors Home. We brought along local musicians and we had music and singing. We also provided fruit and vegetable trays. A good time was had by all.
 
        3. We delivered a bouquet of flowers to a friend of our club who was in the hospital fighting cancer. She was very appreciative. Three weeks later our friend passed. A memorial service was held at our building ( her request ). All donations received were donated to our club.
 
        4. We sponsor mix darts on Friday nights.
 
        5. On Nov. 7/10, at our cenotaph, a Remembrance Day Ceremony took place that included wreath laying. Our Federal and Provincial politicians were in attendance. Fortune Legion with the help of our club and local clergy conducted the ceremony. After the ceremony people attending were treated to a lunch at the Lions Centre. We paid transportation for the Fortune Legion to travel to Garnish.
 
        6. We have a motorized scooter in use in our community.
 
        7. We give get well and sympathy cards to people in our community.
 
        8. We are a partner in Booth Charities T. V. Bingo.

        - We gave a fruit basket and card to a citizen of our community celebrating their 90th birthday.
        - We give get well and sympathy cards to people of our community.
        - We were again this year involved in the Garnish Bakeapple Festival. The following is a list of our events:
            . at the opening of the Festival we served chili and rolls.
            . sponsored a jamboree at our building.
            . held a bingo at the Garnish Community Centre.
            . held a bean and mustard salad supper at our building.
            . worked with the Salvation Army to serve a fish dinner.
            . held our annual Festival Breakfast on the wharf.

 

        - All of our Festival projects were successful, thanks to the many people who volunteered to help us.  The support for our club from the community was fantastic.

    - We held our annual Spring tollgate to raise funds for Diabetes Cavalcade. We gave out pamphlets making people aware of the symptoms of diabetes.
    - We have given the following donations:
            .$100.00 unity garden being constructed on the grounds of Blue Crest Seniors' Home.

            .$100.00 Kin and Friends Radiothon in support of our hospital.
            .$100.00 Janeway Hospital.

        -    Our club participated in a Burin Peninsula volunteers get together, held in Garnish.
        -    We have two scooters in use in our community.
        -    We held a special breakfast in support of Balsom Family Trust Fund.
        -    We sponsor a monthly jamboree at our building.
        -    Members from our club attended the recent D.G.O.
        -    We have given the following donations:
            . $100.00 Burin Peninsula Health Care.
            . $25.00   clubs directory.
            . $25.00   ST. Joseph's School  Lamaline, to help with travel to Provincial Drama Festival Corner Brook.
            . $20.00    Lung Association.
            . $80.00    bought two tickets from Knights of Columbus.
            . $50.00    SPCA Burin.
            . $30.00    ad in Burin Peninsula Drama Festival's Booklet.
        -    We continue to give get well and sympathy cards to people of Garnish and Frenchman's Cove.
        -    At a recent funeral we set up a T . V. monitor in the basement of the church so that the overflow of people could participate in the service. We also directed the parking of vehicles  on the parking lot.
        -    Balsom Family Trust Fund is doing well. Some of the funds have already been used.
        -    Our club sponsored the Junior Speak-off at our building.   A lunch was served after.
        -    We are a partner in Booth Charities TV Bingo.

ACTIVITIES:
 
        - We are one of the partners in Booth Charities TV Bingo.
        - We organized a pea soup dinner January 30th and sold tickets on a bottle of wine at our jamboree. We realized a profit of $500.00 to be donated to the Haiti Relief Effort. Thank to the people of our community for their support.
        - We sponsor a monthly jamboree .
        -We have finished our Valentine Ticket Draw. We were successful in selling 2000 tickets.        
        - We continue to give get well and sympathy cards to people of Garnish and Frenchman's Cove.
        - The projects on our building are now completed. We have new shingles on the roof, a complete new floor and our kitchen re-arranged and made larger.
        - We have two scooters in use in our community.
        - We have given the following donations:
            . $50.00 to help a student go to the Dominican Republic on a volunteering mission.
            . $20.00 to Lung Association.
            . $25.00 to Marystown Minor Hockey.
        - We sponsor mix darts on Friday Night.
        - We gave a basket of fruit to one of our lions who was hospitalized.
        - We are involved with VOCM  Cares Bingo.

ACTIVITIES:

- We have two scooters in use in our community.

-Our members attended the recent zone meeting and were involved in the zone darts. One of our members will be involved with the dart team going to Max Simms Memorial Camp.

-We are one of the partners in Booth Charities TV. Bingo.

-Continuing with repairs to our building.

-We sponsor mix darts on Friday Night.

-Our club passed a motion to sponsor a junior speak-off at the district level. All clubs in our zone have been asked to do this.

-We sponsor a monthly jamboree at our building .

-We are planning an event to support the Haiti Relief Effort. ( next month's report )

-Involved in our annual Valentine Ticket Draw. We are selling tickets in the malls.

        Activities:

         -  We lent our Santa Claus suit  to Garnish Recreation Commission for their kiddies breakfast with Santa.

        -  We continue to give get well and sympathy cards to people of Garnish and Frenchman's Cove.

        -  The week of December 7th---11th our club served breakfast to the students of Jamieson Academy School.

        -  On December 12th our club held its annual Santa Claus parade. We thank all of our guest for being with us on this special occasion and for participating in the celebration. Our club, with the help of friends, prepared the cold plate supper. Also at the charter celebrations, a $100.00 scholarship, in memory of deceased lions, was given to a deserving student from our town.

        -  We have two motor scooters in use in our community.

        -  On December 15th,  we were pleased to honour our seniors by having them come to the Garnish Community Centre. We had local musicians proving music and songs from the Christmas Season. We provided them with a meal and other goodies, more singing and finally a visit from Santa.

        -  On December 19th we prepared a turkey dinner for the Garnish Fire Department. They paid us $10.00 for each meal so we did okay. We have provided this service for the last three or four years, so one could safely assume they like our cooking and hospitality.

        -  We are one of the partners in Booth Charities TV Bingo.

        -  We were able to access funds from the government for much needed repairs to our building. We have new shingles on the roof and a new floor. Repairs will continue until early February.    

        -  We sponsor mix darts on Thursday nights.

            -    On November 8th, at the Lions Center, a Remembrance Day Ceremony took place that included   wreath laying.  Our Federal and Provincial politicians were in attendance.  Fortune Legion with the help of Fortune Sea Cadets and local clergy conducted the ceremony.  After the ceremony people attending were treated to a lunch. We paid transportation for the Fortune Legion to travel to Garnish. 

                On November 11th we were invited to Fortune to participate in their ceremony.  We are so fortunate to have this special relationship with Fortune.

            -    Partner in Booth Charities Bingo.

            -    Our club is now helping the Salvation Army with their Christmas Kettle Campaign.

            -    Two of our motor scooters are in use in our community.

            -    We continue to give get - well and sympathy cards to the people of Garnish and Frenchman's Cove.

  • For our World Services Day project, we visited the Senior's Home in Grand Bank.  We held a short Christian service intermingled with gospel a sing-a-along.  We also provided fruit for the citizens.

  • At our dinner meeting of Oct. 06, we invited two people to membership in our Club.  This is always a marvelous occasion.
  • Involved in VOCM Bingo
  • Our Lions Building is costly to operate but it provides our community with another venue for community events such as Saturday jamborees, birthday and anniversary parties, Lions Club events and other community activities.

         - started our Friday Night mixed darts.

         - again this year we will have a small ticket draw at our meetings in support of  Diabetes  Cavalcade.

         - four of our lions helped with the Golf  Tournament in support of our hospital.

       -We held our annual Canada Day Celebrations. A  flag raising ceremony took place at the Lions Adopt-a- Spot.

        While the flag was being raised O' Canada was being sung.

        -  A  breakfast was served at the Lions Centre. A free well donation was accepted for the breakfast. Canada Day flags,

           pins etc. were distributed to the youth.

             We also had a Canada Day cake that was cut by the eldest male and female present

    -Our community welcomed three soldiers back from stays of duty in Afghanistan. Our club was pleased to participate in this event.

    - held our annual Spring Tollgate and did our diabetes awareness project the same time. We

      collected $300.00 for Diabetes Cavalcade and distributed cards containing information about

  ACTIVITIES WE DO ON A REGULAR BASIS:

  • Give fruit baskets and cards to people celebrating a 90th birthday and a 50th wedding anniversary.

  • Sell tickets each meeting in aid of diabetes. All funds go to diabetes cavalcade.

  • Own a motor scooter being used by a senior in our community.

 OTHER ACTIVITIES:

  • Held our annual cold plate fundraiser and realized a profit of  $ 790.

  • Donated ten cold plates plus extra food to a grieving family in our area.

  • One of our members  made soup. We took a bowl of soup and a cut  of pie  around to shut-ins  in Garnish and Frenchman's Cove.

  • Gave a fruit basket to a lion's wife who was hospitalized.

 

 

  • Electric Scooters available - Garnish Lions Club has two scooters available to anyone in Garnish or Frenchman's Cove who needs assistance in getting around.  There is no charge for this service and all maintenance and repairs are taken care of  by the Lions Club.  Contact any Lions Club member for more information or call President Melvin Francis at 826.2031.

  • Lions Club Annual Senior's Christmas Party -  took place on Thursday, Dec. 11.  More than thirty seniors sang Christmas songs and had supper together.  Santa paid a visit at the end. To see more, follow the link below.

  • Starting Monday, Dec. 01, Garnish Lions Club will be serving breakfast for a week at Jamieson Academy.

  • Lions members are also assisting with the Salvation Army Kettle effort in Marystown.
